Palmeiras go top in Brazil
Palmeiras took full advantage of Santos’ slip-up to move to the top of the Campeonato Paulista table after Wednesday’s games.
Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side now top the league with 16 points from six matches after they won for the fifth time in a row with a 1-0 away triumph at Mirassol.
The win did not come easy as the normally free-scoring Palmeiras side were well held by the hosts but they could not last the 90 minutes with substitute Patrick grabbing a 77th minute winner.
Santos missed the chance to remain on top but still played their part in the most entertaining match of the day – a 2-2 draw with Ponte Preta.
Romulo put the mid-table Ponte Preta side in front but Elano struck just before half-time to level proceedings.
A penalty from Renatinho just before the hour-mark looked to have given Ponte all three points before Maikon Leite’s equaliser five minutes from time forced both sides to share the spoils.
In other matches, third-placed Americana lost 1-0 to Portuguesa after Heverton’s 28th minute goal while Roger’s 19th minute strike gave Oeste a win by a solitary goal against Botafogo.
Borebi’s 75th minute equaliser gave Santo Andre an away point in a 1-1 draw at Mogi Mirim while the day’s other match saw Paulista and Noroeste play out a goalless draw.
